When you spend years operating in high-threat environments, your brain adapts to survive. It learns to spot danger before it happens and to react in milliseconds. Those of us who have served — in the military, in policing, in emergency services develop a highly tuned threat detection system. We become conditioned to operate at a higher baseline of threat awareness.
Over time, though, that same system can become too good at what it does — detecting threat where there really isn’t any, and losing the ability to dial itself down when its not required. Many veterans and first responders find themselves in a near-constant state of hyper-vigilance, unable to feel at ease anywhere. This is a biological consequence of continually operating in high-threat environments.
You don’t have to be diagnosed with PTSD to be in a constant state of hyper-vigilance. If you’ve spent years operating at an elevated threat baseline, you are likely to experience hyper-vigilance. Military veterans and first responders develop a threat detection system that is easier to switch on than it is to switch off.
The good news is that with the right skills, you can learn to recalibrate your threat detection system so that you can dial it down.
So what is the threat detection system?
Deep in your brain sits a fast, powerful survival network. You don’t control it and you can’t see it working, but you feel its output every day. Its job is simple: scan for danger, sound the alarm, and get your body ready to act — all before you’ve consciously registered what’s happening.
When it fires, it doesn’t send you a polite heads-up. It floods your body with stress chemicals, spikes your heart rate, tightens your muscles, sharpens your senses, and narrows your attention hard onto whatever it’s flagged as the threat.
This all happens in a fraction of a second — faster than thought, because thought is too slow and can get in the way of reacting when dealing with potential danger. This system has kept humans alive for a very long time, and if you’ve worked in policing, the military, or emergency services, it has almost certainly kept you alive too. It’s arguably the most valuable skill you had.
But here’s the key to understanding everything that follows: this system runs on speed, not accuracy. When you’ve been trained to deal with high-risk situations, your training automatically kicks in. Once the initial surge of adrenaline fires up action, the thinking part of your brain starts up again, to guide and direct your actions.
Why it becomes overactive
Two things can dial up our threat awareness and most of us who’ve served have had a solid dose of both.
The first is the job itself. Your training deliberately fine tuned this system. Scanning a room on the way in, watching hands, sitting with your back to the wall, running the worst-case scenario before it happens — those were valuable skills we learned. They kept you and the people beside you alive, and you got good at them. Do that day after day, year after year, and the elevated setting stops being something you switch on for a shift or duty and quietly becomes your baseline. This is the cumulative part — no single dramatic event required, just the steady conditioning of operating at a high level of threat awareness for a very long time.
The second is direct exposure. When you’ve been through events where your life or safety was genuinely on the line — or you’ve seen close-up what happens to people when things go wrong, the system learns from it, hard and fast. That’s its job: to learn what’s dangerous so it can protect you quicker next time. So it recalibrates. It becomes more sensitive.
The threshold for being triggered into action drops. And it stops trusting the “all clear,” because last time things looked clear, they weren’t. None of this is a decision you made. It’s your survival brain’s programing — the same way your hand learns not to touch a hot stove — automatic and fast.
The problem is our turning doesn’t come with an instruction or SOP, for turning it back down. It doesn’t know the shift end, the deployment finished, or that you’ve left the job or service. So it keeps running at its operational settings in a world that no longer calls for this all day. It reads the crowded shopping centre like a scene. It reads a slammed car door like a contact. And — this part matters — it reads your own racing heart as more evidence that something must be wrong.
This is a finely-tuned survival system that learned its lessons a little too well, and never got the signal that the emergency is over and that not all situations as as threatening or dangerous as your survival brain is predicting.
What it looks like day to day
Once you recognise this as a threat detection system stuck in the “on” position, a lot of what you might be living with starts making sense as its exactly what you’d expect from an alarm system that’s finely tuned.
- Always scanning. Checking exits, watching people, sitting where you can see the door, unable to switch off in public. Your detector is running continuous patrols even when there’s nothing to find.
- Jumping at everything. A dropped plate, an unexpected touch, a car backfiring, and your whole body jolts before you’ve even identified the sound. The system is wound so tight that tiny inputs trigger a full response.
- A short fuse. A body that’s permanently braced for a fight will tend to find one. When you’re loaded with stress chemicals around the clock, it comes out as irritability, snapping at people you love, anger that feels bigger than the situation deserves.
- Broken sleep. The alarm doesn’t want you unconscious and undefended. Trouble getting off to sleep, sleeping light, waking at every creak in the house — that’s the system refusing to fully stand down overnight.
- Can’t concentrate. Attention that’s been assigned to threat-scanning isn’t available for the conversation, the paperwork, or the show your family is trying to watch with you. You’re not switched off — you’re switched on, just in the wrong direction.
- A body that hurts and tires. Tight chest, clenched jaw, churning gut, aching muscles, bone-deep fatigue. Living in a body that’s constantly braced for action is physically exhausting, and it takes a real toll over time.
- Avoidance and withdrawal. Slowly, you start avoiding whatever sets the alarm off — crowds, driving, certain places, reminders, even your own feelings. It brings relief in the moment, which is why we all do it. The catch is that every time you avoid something, you quietly teach the detector that it really was dangerous, which keeps the whole system on a hair trigger.
If you recognise yourself in the above list, you’re not looking at a collection of separate problems or symptoms. You’re looking at an overactive threat detection system that needs to be recalibrated.
Why reasoning with it doesn’t work
The natural move is to manage hyper-vigilance and related issues from the top down — to use reason and logic. It doesn’t work well as the threat detection system doesn’t take orders from the thinking part of your brain. Your threat detection system operates from an older, faster, part of your brain that is focused on survival, and it outranks the logical thinking part of your brain.
There’s a sound survival reason for that. If we had to hold a committee meeting between the reasoning brain and the survival brain every time something moved in the grass, we’d have been picked off long before we got a word out. So the wiring gives the alarm a shortcut and the authority to act first.
Under high alarm, the calm, reasoning, planning part of your brain actually goes quiet and hands control to the system built for speed. That’s the system working exactly as designed — it just isn’t much help when the “threat” is a queue at the shops.
So if reasoning with it doesn’t work, what does? The alarm ignores your arguments. But it listens very closely to one thing: your body.
The loop you’re actually caught in
Your brain is constantly, quietly monitoring what’s happening inside your body — your heartbeat, your breathing, the tension in your muscles, the state of your gut. It reads all of that, moment to moment, to answer one background question it never stops asking: am I safe right now?
This is the part almost nobody explains, and it changes everything. The brain doesn’t decide you’re safe and then relax your body. It reads your body to work out whether you’re safe. If the signals coming up from your body say braced, tight, fast, ready — the brain draws the obvious conclusion: there must be a threat here, better keep the alarm running. And the running alarm keeps the body braced and tight and fast, which the brain reads as still more proof of danger.
That’s the loop. The alarm tenses the body, the tense body confirms the alarm, round and round. It’s a closed circuit, and it’s why the feeling can sustain itself for hours with no actual threat anywhere in sight.
It also tells you exactly where the leverage is. You can’t break into that loop through the thinking brain — it’s been outranked. But you can break in through the body, because the body is where the alarm is reading its evidence. Change the signals the body is sending up, and you change the conclusion the brain draws.
How to recalibrate your threat detection system
Here a quick guide to what’s required.
Step one: learning to read your own signals
Before you can change the signal, you have to be able to notice and accurately read your body signals. That skill is called interoception — and it just means your awareness of what’s happening inside your body: noticing your heartbeat, your breathing, the tension climbing in your shoulders, the knot in your stomach, heat in your face, restlessness in your legs.
Think of it as reading your own instrument panel. A lot of us quietly learn to tune that panel out, and it makes complete sense that we do. When your body has been the place where fear, pain, and constant readiness live, disconnecting from it is a form of protection. It’s another kind of avoidance, and like all avoidance, it worked — for a while.
The cost is that the alarm is now running completely unmonitored. Sensations build in the background where you can’t see them, until they suddenly tip over into full-blown anxiety, or rage, or a total shutdown that seems to come out of nowhere. It didn’t come out of nowhere. You just weren’t reading the gauges on the way up.
Rebuilding that awareness comes down to three moves, and they’re the first thing I train people to do:
- Noticing the signals early — catching the jaw tightening, the breath going shallow, the shoulders creeping up toward your ears — before any of it hits full alarm.
- Naming what you notice — “my chest is tight,” “my heart’s picking up” — instead of just being swept along by a wave you never saw forming.
- Linking the signal to a feeling and a trigger — recognising that the tight chest usually means anxiety is building; that the heat in your face and hands is anger rising; that this particular pattern kicked off when the phone rang, or right after that reminder, or three steps into the crowded shop.
Once you can connect a body signal to a feeling and to what set it off, the sensation stops being random evidence that you’re in danger and becomes information you can actually use. You go from being ambushed by your own body to reading it — the same way you’d read a scene, a room, or a situation on the job. This isn’t some new-age skill you don’t have. It’s situational awareness, pointed inward. You’ve been using it your whole career.
Step two: changing the signal
Once you can read the gauges, the next step is learning to move them — deliberately shifting the body out of threat-mode and back down.And this is where the loop finally starts working for you instead of against you. When the body genuinely settles — when it slows and softens rather than braces — it sends a completely different message up to the brain: the body is standing down. The threat detection system reads that new signal, and over time it starts to reach a new conclusion: maybe it actually is safe right now, I’m not going to be ambushed or confronted by an aggressor.
This is what we mean by creating a sense of safety in the body. Not talking yourself into feeling safe — you already know that doesn’t work. Showing your nervous system safety, in the only language it genuinely responds to: the signals coming from your own body.
Two things are worth being honest about here.
- It takes repetition. A single calm moment won’t reset the alarm, and you shouldn’t expect it to. Remember how the system got this sensitive in the first place — through repetition. Hundreds of shifts, patrols, and close calls, each one teaching the alarm to fire faster. It recalibrates back down the exact same way: through repeated, felt experiences of the body standing down, each one logged as a little more evidence that not everything is as dangerous or threatening as you expect and the body is preparing to deal with. Do it enough times and the threshold slowly lifts. The alarm fires less often, less hard, and settles faster when it does. That’s your brain physically re-learning, which it’s fully capable of doing at any age.
- This is the foundation, not the whole house. Recalibrating your threat system won’t erase what happened to you, and it isn’t meant to. What it does is get your body back under you — steady enough to sleep, to sit in a room, to be present with your people, and, when the time comes, steady enough to do any deeper work of processing what you’ve been through from solid ground instead of quicksand. You settle the system first, so that anything you take on after that is done from stable footing. That’s why this comes first.
If you have PTSD, none of it requires you to talk about what happened. Not yet anyway. It just requires practice — the same way every operational skill you’ve ever mastered did. You already know how to train something until it’s second nature.
The goal is not to disable your threat detection system. There may well be days you still need it. The goal is to put you back in charge of it — so it fires when there’s a real threat, and stands down when there isn’t. That’s a skill. And skills can be trained.
